Kwame Nkrumah

Kwame Nkrumah was a Ghanaian independence leader who became the country’s first prime minister and president. He championed pan-African unity and led Ghana from independence in 1957 until his overthrow in 1966.

Gold Coast: The British colony on the Gulf of Guinea that became independent Ghana in 1957. Nkrumah organized for independence in this colony, where he built his political base.
Independence of Ghana: Ghana’s achievement of independence from British rule on 6 March 1957. Nkrumah declared independence as prime minister and became its leading symbol.
George Padmore: A Trinidadian-born journalist and pan-African activist who advised Nkrumah and helped organize the 1945 Manchester Pan-African Congress. Padmore helped shape Nkrumah’s pan-African politics and Ghana’s role in the movement.
Organisation of African Unity: A continental organization founded in 1963 by independent African states to promote unity and cooperation. Nkrumah pressed for continental political union, though the organization adopted a looser form.
African federalism: A proposal to unite African states in a federal political structure with shared continental institutions. Nkrumah advocated a political union more centralized than the cooperation most leaders accepted.
Lincoln University: A historically Black university in Pennsylvania, founded in 1854. Nkrumah studied and taught there before returning to the Gold Coast.
One-party state: A political system in which one party holds the legal or effective monopoly on government. Nkrumah’s government made Ghana a one-party state in 1964.
J. B. Danquah: A Ghanaian nationalist intellectual and politician who became a leading rival of Nkrumah. Their competition exposed contrasting strategies and visions for Ghanaian self-government.
African Union: A continental organization established in 2002 as the successor to the Organisation of African Unity. Its agenda of integration continues debates Nkrumah advanced.
Nonalignment: A foreign-policy stance that avoids formal alignment with competing military blocs. Ghana pursued nonalignment while Nkrumah also sought to reshape global power through African unity.
