Kwantung Army

The Imperial Japanese Army command stationed in Manchuria, whose officers seized territory, dominated Manchukuo, and drove expansion into China.

Mukden Incident: A 1931 explosion near a Japanese-owned railway in Manchuria, used by Japanese officers as a pretext for invasion. Kwantung Army officers exploited the railway explosion to launch the occupation of Manchuria.
Russo-Japanese War: The 1904–1905 war between Japan and Russia over influence in Korea and Manchuria. Japan's victory secured the railway zone and leasehold that became the army's base.
