Kwŏn Yul

Kwŏn Yul was a Korean general of the Joseon dynasty who commanded forces against Japan during the Imjin War, notably at the 1593 Battle of Haengju.

Battle of Haengju: A 1593 Joseon victory over Japanese forces at Haengju Fortress during the Imjin War. Kwŏn Yul commanded the defenders in the battle most closely associated with his military reputation.
Haengju Fortress: A mountain fortress near the Han River in present-day Goyang, South Korea. Its elevated position gave Kwŏn Yul’s defenders an advantage over the attacking force.
Yi Sun-sin: A Joseon admiral celebrated for naval victories against Japanese forces during the Imjin War. His naval campaigns complemented the land resistance Kwŏn Yul led.
Imjin War: The 1592–1598 conflict in which Japan invaded Joseon Korea and Ming China intervened. Kwŏn Yul’s military service is part of this broader war.
Siege of Jinju (1593): A Japanese siege that captured Jinju Fortress in 1593 during the Imjin War. Its fall followed Haengju and exposed the costs of Joseon resistance.
Joseon Hwacha: A Joseon-era multiple-rocket launcher used to fire many projectiles in a single salvo. Hwacha are traditionally associated with the defenders’ firepower at Haengju.
Toyotomi Hideyoshi: The Japanese ruler who ordered the invasions of Korea beginning in 1592. Hideyoshi’s invasion placed Kwŏn Yul in command against Japanese forces.
Korean resistance to Japanese invasions: The military and civilian opposition to Japan’s invasions of Korea from 1592 to 1598. His command at Haengju became one episode in this wider resistance.
Battle of Byeokjegwan: A 1593 battle near Seoul in which Japanese forces defeated a Ming-led army during the Imjin War. It formed part of the same campaign in which Kwŏn Yul defended the approaches to Seoul.
Joseon Army: The land forces of Korea’s Joseon dynasty, organized under royal and regional command. Kwŏn Yul’s command drew on this military institution during the invasion.
