Kyrgyzstan

Kyrgyzstan is a landlocked country in Central Asia, bordered by Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and China. Its mountainous terrain includes much of the Tian Shan range.

Bishkek: Bishkek is the capital and largest city of Kyrgyzstan. The capital concentrates national government, commerce, and much of the country’s urban population.
Kyrgyz Khanate: The Kyrgyz Khanate was a medieval Turkic polity associated with the Yenisei Kyrgyz. It belongs to the longer history invoked in accounts of Kyrgyz political identity, though it was not the modern state.
Kumtor Gold Mine: Kumtor is a high-altitude gold mine in eastern Kyrgyzstan and one of the country’s largest industrial operations. Gold production has made the mine central to national revenue and disputes over resource control.

Epic of Manas: The Epic of Manas is a vast Kyrgyz oral epic about the hero Manas and his descendants. It is a major expression of Kyrgyz identity and a prominent national cultural symbol.
Tian Shan: The Tian Shan is a major mountain system stretching across Central Asia and western China. Its ranges dominate Kyrgyzstan’s terrain and shape settlement, transport, and water supplies.
Russian conquest of Central Asia: The Russian conquest of Central Asia was the nineteenth-century expansion of the Russian Empire into the region. Imperial expansion brought the territory of present-day Kyrgyzstan under Russian rule.
Kyrgyzstan–China relations: Kyrgyzstan–China relations are the political and economic ties between the two neighboring countries. China is a major trade partner and source of investment in infrastructure and mining.
Uzbekistan: Uzbekistan is a landlocked country in Central Asia that borders Kyrgyzstan and other regional states. Its larger population and more extensive lowland agriculture contrast with Kyrgyzstan’s mountainous geography.
Manas: Manas is the legendary hero at the center of the Kyrgyz epic named after him. The hero embodies ideals of unity and resistance within Kyrgyz cultural memory.
