L. Ron Hubbard

L. Ron Hubbard (1911–1986) was an American author who founded the Church of Scientology and developed Scientology’s doctrines and practices.

Dianetics: A system of mental self-help created by L. Ron Hubbard, first presented publicly in 1950. Hubbard introduced Dianetics before founding Scientology, and later incorporated it into the movement.
Thetan: In Scientology, the immortal spiritual self, distinct from the body and mind. Hubbard made the thetan central to Scientology’s account of human identity.
Mary Sue Hubbard: L. Ron Hubbard’s third wife and a senior Scientology executive who was convicted in the 1970s for her role in the Guardian’s Office conspiracy. She helped lead Scientology’s intelligence apparatus during Hubbard’s later years.
Sea Org: A religious order within Scientology whose members take a billion-year service pledge. Hubbard established the Sea Org in 1967 as an elite organization devoted to Scientology’s mission.
Operation Snow White: A 1970s Scientology operation to remove damaging records from government agencies, resulting in criminal convictions of senior members. The operation exposed unlawful conduct within an organization Hubbard led and directed.
Excalibur (unpublished book): An unpublished manuscript L. Ron Hubbard reportedly wrote in 1938 about the meaning of existence. The manuscript is often cited in accounts of Hubbard’s early thinking, though its contents remain unavailable.
Auditing (Scientology): A Scientology practice in which a trained auditor guides a person through questions intended to address spiritual difficulties. Hubbard developed auditing from Dianetics into a central Scientology practice.
David Miscavige: The leader of the Church of Scientology since the early 1980s. Miscavige succeeded Hubbard as the organization’s dominant leader after Hubbard’s death.
Religious Technology Center: A Scientology organization that holds trademarks associated with Scientology and oversees their use. Hubbard assigned control of Scientology’s intellectual property to the organizational structure that includes this body.
Fair Game (Scientology): A Scientology policy concerning people designated as enemies, historically associated with permission to use hostile tactics against them. Hubbard’s policy became central to public disputes over Scientology’s treatment of critics.
