La Bayadère

A ballet choreographed by Marius Petipa, first staged in 1877, about temple dancer Nikiya and warrior Solor in an imagined India. Its best-known sequence is the Kingdom of the Shades.

Kingdom of the Shades: A celebrated ballet sequence in which the Shades descend in repeated arabesques. This act’s procession is the ballet’s most enduring choreography and a landmark of classical ensemble dancing.
Marius Petipa: A French-born ballet dancer and choreographer who shaped classical ballet in imperial Russia. He choreographed the 1877 premiere and later revised the ballet.
Ballet blanc: A ballet convention in which dancers wear white costumes, often in a supernatural or dreamlike ensemble. The Shades sequence uses white-costumed dancers to create its otherworldly effect.

Grand pas: A formal ballet sequence built around a principal couple and a series of solo and ensemble dances. The ballet’s set-piece structure draws on the grand-pas tradition.
Natalia Makarova: A Russian-born ballet dancer and choreographer who defected to the West in 1970. Her production brought a Kirov-derived La Bayadère to major Western companies.
Solor: A warrior who loves Nikiya but is promised to Gamzatti in La Bayadère. His divided loyalty leads to Nikiya’s death and the final catastrophe.
Imperial Ballet of the Russian Empire: The ballet company maintained by Russia’s imperial theatres before the 1917 revolution. Its dancers and resources made the 1877 production possible.
