La Tène culture

An Iron Age archaeological culture that spread across much of Europe, associated with Celtic-speaking peoples and named for a site beside Lake Neuchâtel in Switzerland.

La Tène site: An archaeological site on Lake Neuchâtel in Switzerland that gave its name to the La Tène period and culture. Its weaponry and other finds established the archaeological label.
Celtic languages: A branch of the Indo-European language family that includes ancient and modern languages associated with Celtic-speaking communities. Linguistic evidence informs, but does not by itself define, the culture's association with Celtic speakers.
Celtic warfare: The military practices and conflicts of ancient Celtic-speaking peoples, known through texts and archaeological evidence. Weapons, fortifications, and battlefield finds illuminate warfare in La Tène societies.
Alesia: A fortified settlement in Gaul besieged by Julius Caesar during his campaign against Vercingetorix in 52 BCE. The siege marks a famous military episode near the end of independent Gaulish power.
Archaeological culture: A recurring pattern of artifacts and practices used by archaeologists to classify material remains across places and periods. La Tène is an archaeological classification, not direct proof of a unified people.
Hallstatt culture: An Iron Age archaeological culture of Central Europe that preceded and partly overlapped with La Tène culture. Its earlier material traditions provide the main archaeological comparison.
Heuneburg: An early Iron Age fortified settlement in southern Germany, associated with the Hallstatt cultural sphere. Its earlier elite networks provide context for the social landscape preceding La Tène.
Oppidum: A large fortified settlement, especially one associated with late Iron Age Europe. Many late La Tène centers are classified as oppida.
Gallic Wars: The campaigns waged by Julius Caesar against Gallic peoples from 58 to 50 BCE. Roman conquest transformed societies that had developed within the La Tène world.
Celtic identity: The ways ancient or modern communities understood and expressed identities associated with Celtic languages and traditions. The link between La Tène material culture and a single Celtic identity remains debated.
