Labor Day

Labor Day is a public holiday honoring workers and the labor movement. In the United States, it is observed on the first Monday in September; many countries observe workers’ holidays on other dates.

Haymarket affair: A violent 1886 confrontation in Chicago following a rally for an eight-hour workday. The affair shaped labor politics and helped make May 1 a workers’ holiday elsewhere.
Uniform Monday Holiday Act: A 1968 U.S. federal law that moved several holidays to Mondays to create more three-day weekends. Labor Day’s first-Monday rule fits the broader federal policy of fixed weekday holidays.
International Workers' Day: A May 1 holiday honoring workers and the labor movement, observed in many countries. It is the most widespread alternative to the September observance in the United States and Canada.
