Labor Zionism

Labor Zionism was a socialist movement that pursued Jewish self-determination through immigration, collective settlement, and organized labor in Palestine and later Israel.

Zionism: A movement supporting the establishment and development of a Jewish national homeland in the historic Land of Israel. Labor Zionism developed as a socialist current within this broader national movement.
Socialism: A family of political and economic ideas advocating social or collective control over productive resources. Labor Zionists adapted socialist ideas to national self-determination and settlement.
Berl Katznelson: A Labor Zionist thinker and editor who helped shape the ideology and institutions of the Yishuv. His writings and leadership gave the movement an influential intellectual voice.
Kibbutz movement: The network of collective settlements in Israel, historically associated with communal ownership and agricultural labor. Its settlements made collective labor a practical model rather than only a political ideal.
Yishuv: The Jewish community in Palestine before the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948. Labor Zionist institutions became major forces within this pre-state community.
Second Aliyah: The wave of Jewish immigration to Ottoman Palestine, chiefly from Eastern Europe, between 1904 and 1914. Many Labor Zionist institutions and ideas took shape among immigrants during this period.
Aliyah: Jewish immigration to the Land of Israel, especially as understood in the context of Zionism. Immigration was the movement's means of building a Jewish society in Palestine.
David Ben-Gurion: A Labor Zionist leader who became Israel's first prime minister in 1948. He translated the movement's organizational strength into state-building and political leadership.
Moshav: A cooperative Israeli agricultural village in which households generally farm individual plots while sharing some services and marketing. It offered cooperative settlement without the kibbutz's extensive communal ownership.
Israeli Declaration of Independence: The document proclaimed the establishment of the State of Israel on May 14, 1948. Its state-building context reflected decades of Labor Zionist organization and settlement.
