Labrador Current

The Labrador Current is a cold ocean current that flows south from the Arctic along Labrador and Newfoundland, carrying sea ice and icebergs into the northwest Atlantic.

West Greenland Current: A northward-flowing current along Greenland’s west coast that carries relatively warm water into the Labrador Sea. It supplies water that mixes with the Labrador Current in the Labrador Sea.
North Atlantic right whale: A critically endangered baleen whale that feeds in coastal and shelf waters of the western North Atlantic. Its habitat and migration overlap waters influenced by the current.
Oceanic climate: A climate moderated by the ocean, with relatively small seasonal temperature ranges and abundant moisture. The current cools coastal waters and helps moderate nearby temperatures.
Gulf Stream: A warm, swift Atlantic current flowing northeastward from the Gulf of Mexico along the eastern United States. It contrasts with the Labrador Current and contributes warm water near the Grand Banks.
Labrador Sea: A marginal sea of the North Atlantic between Labrador, Greenland, and the Canadian Arctic Archipelago. The current passes through this basin before flowing south along Canada’s coast.
Atlantic cod: A large North Atlantic fish that was historically central to fisheries around Newfoundland and Labrador. Cold shelf waters shaped the habitat of cod stocks in the region.
Newfoundland fisheries collapse: The severe decline of Newfoundland’s northern cod stocks that led to a Canadian fishing moratorium in 1992. The current shaped the ecosystem, though fishing pressure and other factors drove the collapse.
East Greenland Current: A cold southward current flowing along Greenland’s eastern coast into the North Atlantic. Like the Labrador Current, it carries polar water south, but follows Greenland’s opposite coast.
North Atlantic Current: A northeastward extension of the Gulf Stream that carries warm water across the North Atlantic. Its waters meet the Labrador Current near the Grand Banks.
Iceberg Alley: A stretch of the North Atlantic near Newfoundland where icebergs drift south from Arctic waters. The current carries many of its icebergs toward Newfoundland.
