Lagrangian flow field

A description of fluid motion that tracks individual fluid particles and their changing positions over time, rather than measuring velocity at fixed locations.

Lagrangian trajectory: The path traced by an individual fluid particle as it moves through space over time. A trajectory is the particle-by-particle record that this description follows.
Fluid particle: An idealized small parcel of fluid treated as a unit while its motion is analyzed. The field follows these parcels rather than fixed locations.
Lagrangian coherent structure: A material structure in a flow that organizes transport over a finite time interval. It is identified from how nearby particles separate or remain grouped.
Eulerian flow field: A representation of fluid motion using properties specified at fixed spatial locations and times. It is the direct fixed-location alternative to this particle-following field.
Velocity field: A vector field assigning a velocity to each point in space and time. Evaluating velocity along a particle’s path gives its motion in the flow.
Material coordinates: Coordinates that identify fluid particles by their positions in a chosen reference configuration. They label particles consistently as the flow carries them elsewhere.
Finite-time Lyapunov exponent: A measure of the rate at which nearby trajectories separate over a finite time. It helps reveal transport boundaries in particle-tracked flows.
Lagrangian mechanics: A formulation of mechanics based on generalized coordinates and the difference between kinetic and potential energy. Despite the shared name, it is a mechanics formulation, not a fluid-following description.
Material derivative: An operator giving the rate of change of a property while moving with a fluid particle. It expresses how particle-following rates relate to changes measured in a flow.
Spatial coordinates: Coordinates that specify locations in physical space at a given time. They provide the fixed-position framework distinguished from particle labels.
