Laguna de Bay

Laguna de Bay is the Philippines’ largest lake, southeast of Manila. Its shores border Metro Manila, Laguna, and Rizal, and the Pasig River connects it to Manila Bay.

Pasig River: A river that flows from Laguna de Bay through Metro Manila to Manila Bay. It is the lake’s outlet and its direct waterway connection to Manila Bay.
Laguna Lake Development Authority: A Philippine government agency responsible for managing Laguna de Bay and its watershed. It regulates lake use and coordinates environmental management across the basin.
Taal Volcano: An active volcano in Batangas, Philippines, centered on an island within Taal Lake. A major prehistoric eruption from this volcanic system helped form the lake basin.
Flooding in Metro Manila: The inundation of parts of Metro Manila from intense rainfall, river overflow, or coastal and lake processes. High lake levels can obstruct drainage and worsen flooding in nearby low-lying areas.
Napindan Channel: A waterway linking Laguna de Bay to the Pasig River near Taguig. This channel controls much of the lake’s exchange with the Pasig River.
Inland fishery: The capture or cultivation of fish in inland waters such as lakes and rivers. The lake supports major capture fisheries and aquaculture livelihoods.
Lake basin: A low-lying area that collects water and may contain a lake. Laguna de Bay occupies a basin shaped by tectonic and volcanic processes.
Eutrophication: The enrichment of water with nutrients that can trigger excessive plant and algal growth. Nutrient pollution can cause algal blooms and oxygen loss in the lake.
Laguna de Bay watershed: The land area whose rivers and runoff drain into Laguna de Bay. Rainfall and pollution across this broad catchment flow toward the lake.
Aquaculture: The farming of aquatic organisms in freshwater or marine environments. Fish pens and cages make aquaculture a major use of the lake.
