Lake Edward

Lake Edward is a freshwater lake on the Uganda–Democratic Republic of the Congo border, within the Albertine Rift and the Nile basin. It is one of Africa’s Great Lakes.

Albertine Rift: The western branch of the East African Rift System, extending through the western Great Lakes region. Lake Edward occupies a rift basin within this geological zone.
Kazinga Channel: A natural waterway connecting Lake George to Lake Edward in Uganda. This channel is the lake’s principal connection to Lake George.
Queen Elizabeth National Park: A protected area in western Uganda that includes Lake Edward’s northeastern shore. Its lakeshore habitats and waters are part of the park’s conservation landscape.
Ishasha: A region in southwestern Uganda near the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The Ishasha sector lies beside Lake Edward’s northeastern shore.
Nile basin: The drainage basin whose waters flow through the Nile River system. Lake Edward drains northward through the Semliki River toward the Nile.
Ruwenzori Mountains: A mountain range on the Uganda–Democratic Republic of the Congo border, west of Lake Edward. Runoff from this high range contributes water to the lake and its tributaries.
Virunga National Park: A protected area in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo bordering Lake Edward. The park encompasses much of the lake’s western shore.
Lake Edward overflow of 1960: A severe flood episode associated with unusually high water levels in Lake Edward around 1960. The episode illustrates how lake-level changes can affect nearby settlements and landscapes.
Lake George: A lake in western Uganda connected to Lake Edward by the Kazinga Channel. The Kazinga Channel links Lake George with Lake Edward.
Ishasha River: A river flowing from the Ruwenzori region into Lake Edward. It is one of the rivers that supplies the lake.
