Lake Huron

Lake Huron is one of North America’s five Great Lakes, bordered by Ontario and Michigan. It connects to Lake Michigan through the Straits of Mackinac and drains south through the St. Clair River.

Straits of Mackinac: A narrow waterway connecting Lake Michigan and Lake Huron between Michigan’s Upper and Lower Peninsulas. This strait joins Lake Huron to Lake Michigan, making them one hydrologic system.
Great Lakes: A group of five large freshwater lakes on the Canada–United States border and within North America. Lake Huron is one of the five lakes in this connected group.
Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary: A protected area in Lake Huron containing a concentration of historically significant shipwrecks. Its wrecks document the dangers of navigation in Huron’s western waters.
Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement: A Canada–United States agreement addressing pollution and ecosystem health in the Great Lakes. Its commitments apply to shared waters such as Lake Huron.
St. Clair River: A river flowing south from Lake Huron into Lake St. Clair. It carries Lake Huron’s outflow toward Lake Erie.
Lake Michigan: A Great Lake bordered entirely by the United States and connected to Lake Huron through the Straits of Mackinac. The two lakes share a connection and nearly the same water level.
Lake Huron shipwrecks: The remains of vessels lost in Lake Huron, preserved by cold freshwater and underwater conditions. They make the lake a major site for maritime archaeology.
Great Lakes Compact: An agreement among Great Lakes states regulating water withdrawals and diversions from the basin. The compact governs many withdrawals from the Lake Huron watershed.
Lake St. Clair: A shallow freshwater lake between Lake Huron and Lake Erie, bordered by Ontario and Michigan. It receives the St. Clair River and passes water toward the Detroit River.
Lake Superior: The largest and deepest of North America’s Great Lakes, lying north and west of Lake Huron. It is the upstream Great Lake whose water reaches Huron through the St. Marys River.
