Lake Kariba

Lake Kariba is a large artificial lake on the Zambezi River, shared by Zambia and Zimbabwe. It formed when Kariba Dam impounded the river.

Kariba Dam: A hydroelectric dam across the Zambezi River that created Lake Kariba. Its closure flooded the Zambezi valley and established the lake.
Hydroelectricity: Electricity generated by converting the energy of moving or falling water. Water released from Lake Kariba drives turbines at the dam.
Kariba Tonga: Tonga communities whose homes and lands were affected by the creation of Lake Kariba. Many were displaced when the reservoir flooded the Zambezi valley.
Zambezi River Basin: The drainage basin of the Zambezi River and its tributaries across southern Africa. Rainfall and river flows across this basin determine water entering the lake.
Zambezi River: A major African river flowing eastward to the Indian Ocean. The river was impounded to form Lake Kariba.
Kariba South Power Station: A hydroelectric power station on the Zimbabwean side of Kariba Dam. It generates electricity using water stored in the lake.
Lake Kariba Fisheries: Commercial and subsistence fisheries operating in Lake Kariba. The new reservoir developed into a major source of fish and livelihoods.
Drought in Southern Africa: Prolonged periods of unusually low rainfall affecting parts of southern Africa. Drought can reduce inflows and constrain hydropower generation from Lake Kariba.
Operation Noah: A wildlife rescue operation conducted during the filling of Lake Kariba in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Rescuers captured stranded animals as rising water inundated the valley.
Kariba North Bank Power Station: A hydroelectric power station on the Zambian side of Kariba Dam. It draws on the same reservoir as the southern station.
