Lake Kivu

Lake Kivu is a freshwater lake in the Albertine Rift, on the border between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It is unusually deep and stores large quantities of dissolved methane and carbon dioxide.

Lake overturn: The mixing of a lake’s water layers, sometimes bringing deep water to the surface. A major overturn could release gases accumulated in Kivu’s deep water.
KivuWatt: A power plant in Rwanda that generates electricity using methane extracted from Lake Kivu. It is the lake’s best-known commercial methane-to-electricity project.
Lake Nyos disaster: A 1986 limnic eruption at Cameroon’s Lake Nyos that released carbon dioxide and killed about 1,700 people. It is the clearest precedent for the deadly gas-release hazard considered at Kivu.
Albertine Rift: The western branch of the East African Rift, extending along the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo and neighboring countries. Lake Kivu occupies part of this tectonically active rift valley.
Meromictic lake: A lake whose deep water does not mix regularly with its surface water. Kivu’s persistent layers keep dissolved gases concentrated at depth.
Lake Kivu methane: Methane dissolved in the deep waters of Lake Kivu, produced largely by microbial processes. This gas supplies fuel for electricity generation and is removed to manage accumulation.
Rwanda: A landlocked country in East Africa, bordering Lake Kivu to the east. Rwanda develops methane resources and shares the lake’s risks.
East African Rift: A system of tectonic rifts where the African Plate is splitting into smaller plates. The broader rift system provides the geological setting for Kivu’s deep basin.
Chemocline: A boundary in a body of water where chemical properties change sharply with depth. Kivu’s chemoclines separate deep, gas-rich water from upper layers.
KivuWatt power plant: A methane-fueled electricity facility on the Rwandan shore of Lake Kivu. Its operation demonstrates how industrial extraction can draw on the lake’s gas reserves.
