Lake Maracaibo

Lake Maracaibo is a large brackish body of water in northwestern Venezuela, connected to the Gulf of Venezuela and surrounded by a major oil-producing basin.

Tidal bore: A wave that travels upstream in a river or estuary as the tide rises. Tidal exchange through the lake’s strait helps shape water movement in the basin.
Maracaibo Basin: A sedimentary basin in northwestern Venezuela containing the country’s largest petroleum reserves. Its oil-bearing geology extends beneath and around the lake.
Caribbean Plate: A tectonic plate underlying much of the Caribbean Sea and adjoining regions. Its interactions with neighboring plates helped shape northwestern Venezuela’s mountain belts and basins.
Oil spill: The release of liquid petroleum into the environment, especially into marine or freshwater systems. Leaks from extensive oil infrastructure have polluted parts of the lake.
Catatumbo lightning: A recurring electrical storm phenomenon concentrated near the mouth of the Catatumbo River in Venezuela. The lake’s geography and moisture supply help sustain the storms concentrated at its southwestern end.
Venezuela oil industry: The extraction, refining, and export of petroleum in Venezuela. Production from the surrounding basin made the lake a center of Venezuela’s oil industry.
Andes: A continental mountain range running along the western edge of South America. The northern Andes bound the basin and influenced its geological development.
Eutrophication: The over-enrichment of water with nutrients, often causing excessive algal growth and oxygen depletion. Nutrient inputs contribute to recurring water-quality problems in the lake.
Catatumbo River: A major river flowing from Colombia into Lake Maracaibo. It is the basin’s largest freshwater source and carries sediment into the lake.
Cabimas: A Venezuelan city on the eastern shore of Lake Maracaibo, closely associated with petroleum production. Its growth was shaped by oil fields developed along the lake’s eastern shore.
