Lake Mweru

Lake Mweru is a freshwater lake on the border of Zambia and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It lies in the Congo River basin and drains north through the Luvua River.

Luvua River: The river that carries water north from Lake Mweru toward the Lualaba River. It is the lake’s principal outlet and links it to the Congo River system.
East African Rift: A system of tectonic valleys and faults extending through eastern Africa. Lake Mweru occupies a basin associated with the western branch of this rift system.
Mweru-Luapula fishery: The commercial and subsistence fishery operating in Lake Mweru and the Luapula River system. Fishing is a major source of food and income around the lake.
Zambia: A landlocked country in southern Africa. Its northern border runs through Lake Mweru, and its shore holds major settlements.
Luapula River: A river that flows north from the Bangweulu region and enters Lake Mweru. It supplies the lake’s largest inflow.

Nchelenge: A town on Lake Mweru’s Zambian shore and the administrative center of Nchelenge District. It is a prominent lakeside settlement and fishing center.
Democratic Republic of the Congo: A country in Central Africa with a large share of the Congo River basin. Its southeastern border meets Zambia across the lake.
Lake Mweru Wantipa: A shallow lake in northern Zambia, east of Lake Mweru, with variable connections to the Mweru basin. Its intermittent drainage links nearby wetlands to the lake’s wider watershed.
