Lake Nasser

Lake Nasser is a vast reservoir in southern Egypt and northern Sudan, formed when the Aswan High Dam impounded the Nile. Its creation transformed water storage, agriculture, and archaeological preservation in the region.

Aswan High Dam: A dam across the Nile in southern Egypt that creates Lake Nasser and generates hydroelectric power. Its closure formed the reservoir and controls water released downstream.
Nubian displacement: The forced relocation of Nubian communities from lands inundated by Lake Nasser and other reservoirs. Rising reservoir waters submerged settlements and displaced tens of thousands of Nubians.
International Campaign to Save the Monuments of Nubia: A UNESCO-led international effort to document and relocate monuments threatened by Lake Nasser’s rising waters. The campaign was organized in response to the reservoir’s planned inundation of Nubian sites.
Lake Nubia: The Sudanese portion of the reservoir created by the Aswan High Dam, continuous with Lake Nasser in Egypt. The reservoir has a different name on the Sudanese side of the border.

Lake Nasser and Lake Nubia: The Egyptian and Sudanese names for the connected reservoir formed behind the Aswan High Dam. The paired names distinguish national sections of one transboundary body of water.
Nile Basin Initiative: A regional partnership among Nile Basin countries seeking cooperative development and management of shared water resources. Lake Nasser’s long-term reliability depends partly on cooperation across the Nile Basin.
