Lake Peipus

A large freshwater lake on the Estonia–Russia border, comprising Lake Peipus proper, Lake Lämmijärv, and Lake Pskov. It drains through the Narva River into the Gulf of Finland.

Lake Peipus proper: The northern and largest basin of the Lake Peipus lake system, shared by Estonia and Russia. It forms the broad northern part of the three-basin lake.
Battle on the Ice: A 1242 battle in which Novgorodian forces defeated the Livonian Order on frozen Lake Peipus. The lake’s ice became the setting for this pivotal medieval clash.
Peipsi whitefish: A freshwater whitefish population native to the Lake Peipus system. It is among the lake’s characteristic commercial fish.
Eutrophication: The enrichment of water with nutrients that can trigger excessive plant and algal growth. Nutrient loading has contributed to ecological pressure in the lake.
Lake Lämmijärv: The narrow strait-like middle basin connecting Lake Peipus proper with Lake Pskov. It links the northern and southern basins within the lake system.
Alexander Nevsky: A prince of Novgorod and Vladimir who led Russian forces in the thirteenth century. He commanded the Novgorodian side at the Battle on the Ice.
European perch: A widespread European freshwater fish valued by fisheries and recreational anglers. Perch is a significant fishery species in Lake Peipus.
Cyanobacterial bloom: A rapid increase of cyanobacteria in water, sometimes producing toxins and depleting oxygen. Warm, nutrient-rich conditions can promote blooms in Lake Peipus.
Lake Pskov: The southern basin of the Lake Peipus lake system, lying mainly in Russia. It is the system’s southernmost major basin.
Livonian Order: A Catholic military order that ruled territories in medieval Livonia. Its forces fought Novgorod on the lake in 1242.
