Duluth–Superior harbor : A major commercial harbor at the western end of Lake Superior, shared by Duluth, Minnesota, and Superior, Wisconsin. It is one of the lake’s principal gateways for iron ore and grain.
Edmund Fitzgerald : An American Great Lakes freighter that sank in Lake Superior during a storm on November 10, 1975. Its loss became the lake’s best-known modern shipping disaster.
Lake Superior basin : The land area from which water drains into Lake Superior and its tributaries. Its watershed covers a broad region around the lake’s shoreline.
Lake stratification : The formation of distinct water layers with different temperatures or densities. Superior’s seasonal layering shapes mixing, nutrients, and aquatic habitat.
