Lake Tai

Lake Tai is a large, shallow freshwater lake in the Yangtze River Delta, shared by Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces. It is a major source of water and a center of regional fishing and culture.

Taihu Basin: The drainage basin surrounding Lake Tai, spanning parts of Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Anhui, and Shanghai. Rivers and runoff from this wider catchment deliver water and pollutants to the lake.
Wuxi drinking water crisis: A 2007 disruption of Wuxi’s drinking-water supply after severe cyanobacterial blooms affected Lake Tai. The crisis made the consequences of lake blooms immediate for millions of residents.
Yangtze River Delta: The low-lying delta formed where the Yangtze River deposits sediment into the East China Sea. Lake Tai lies within this changing deltaic landscape.

Microcystis: A genus of freshwater cyanobacteria that can form dense blooms and produce microcystin toxins. Microcystis has dominated many Lake Tai blooms and shaped health concerns.
Taihu Plain: A low, flat plain surrounding Lake Tai in the lower Yangtze region. Its slight relief and waterways frame the lake’s distinctive shallow basin.
Grand Canal of China: A historic canal system linking northern and southern China, with sections connected to Lake Tai. The canal network ties the lake to regional transport and water management.
Wuxi: A city in Jiangsu on the northern shore of Lake Tai. Urban growth around Wuxi has intensified pressure on the lake’s northern waters.
Microcystin: A family of toxins produced by some cyanobacteria that can damage the liver. Some Lake Tai bloom-forming cyanobacteria produce toxins relevant to water treatment.
