Lake Toba

Lake Toba is a large lake in northern Sumatra, Indonesia, filling the caldera formed by a series of major volcanic eruptions. Samosir Island rises within the lake.

Toba supervolcano: A volcanic system in northern Sumatra capable of exceptionally large explosive eruptions. Its eruptions excavated the caldera now occupied by Lake Toba.
Youngest Toba Tuff: A widespread deposit of volcanic ash and pumice from the Toba eruption about 74,000 years ago. Its distribution records the eruption responsible for much of the caldera’s formation.
Toba Regency: An administrative regency in North Sumatra Province, Indonesia, bordering Lake Toba. It is one of the local governments responsible for settlements and services around the lake.
