Vänern

Vänern is Sweden’s largest lake, located in the southwest of the country. Its waters flow through the Göta älv to the Kattegat.

Göta älv: A Swedish river that carries water from Lake Vänern through western Sweden to the Kattegat. It is Vänern’s outlet and the lake’s direct connection to the sea.
Klarälven: A river flowing south from Norway through Värmland into Lake Vänern. It is one of Vänern’s principal tributaries, bringing water from the north.
Karlstad: A city in Värmland, Sweden, situated at the delta of the Klarälven on Lake Vänern. Its position at the river delta links the city’s history and growth to the lake.
Vänern–Göta älv waterway: The connected lake-and-river route running from Lake Vänern toward the Kattegat. This waterway made inland shipping between central Sweden and the west coast possible.

Flooding of Lake Vänern: High-water events around Lake Vänern that inundate shorelines and threaten nearby communities. The lake’s large catchment can produce damaging high levels when inflows exceed discharge.
Götaland: The southern part of Sweden, traditionally comprising its southern provinces. Vänern lies in southwestern Sweden, within this broad historical region.
Trollhätte Canal: A navigable waterway that bypasses rapids on the Göta älv between Vänern and the sea. Locks and channels make the lake’s outlet navigable for larger vessels.
