Lake Volta

Lake Volta is a large artificial reservoir in Ghana, formed when the Akosombo Dam blocked the Volta River. It supports hydropower, transport, fishing, and water supply.

Akosombo Dam: A hydroelectric dam on Ghana’s Volta River that created Lake Volta. Its construction impounded the Volta River and formed the lake.
Akosombo Dam resettlement: The relocation of communities displaced by the creation of Lake Volta. Flooding for the reservoir forced tens of thousands of people from their homes.

Lake Volta fishing: Commercial and subsistence fishing on Ghana’s Lake Volta. The reservoir supports a major fishery and livelihoods across its shoreline.
