Lake Vostok

Lake Vostok is a vast subglacial freshwater lake beneath East Antarctica, sealed under kilometers of ice and isolated from the surface for millions of years.

Subglacial lake: A body of liquid water trapped beneath a glacier or ice sheet. Lake Vostok is one of Earth’s largest known examples of this broader class.
Andrey Kapitsa: A Soviet and Russian geographer who studied Antarctica and identified evidence for a large subglacial lake. His seismic interpretation in 1964 provided early evidence for the lake beneath Vostok Station.
