Lakhmid Kingdom

The Lakhmid Kingdom was a pre-Islamic Arab monarchy centered at al-Hirah in present-day Iraq. Ruled by the Lakhmid dynasty from the third to seventh centuries, it served as a Persian ally on the Byzantine frontier.

Al-Hirah: An ancient city near present-day Kufa in Iraq and the political center of the Lakhmid kingdom. The city was the kingdom’s capital and a major center of Arab Christian culture.
Sasanian–Roman wars: A series of conflicts between the Sasanian and Roman, later Byzantine, empires from the third to seventh centuries. Lakhmid forces helped Persia pressure its western imperial rival.
Imru' al-Qais ibn 'Amr: An early Lakhmid ruler whose fourth-century funerary inscription is among the oldest known Arabic inscriptions. His inscription offers rare direct evidence for early Lakhmid kingship.
Church of the East: A Christian church tradition that developed in the Persian Empire and used Syriac as a major liturgical language. Its institutions and communities were prominent among Christians around al-Hirah.

Arab conquests: The seventh-century expansion of Muslim rule from Arabia across the Middle East and North Africa. The conquests soon transformed the political order that had succeeded the Lakhmids.
