Land reform movement

A political or social movement advocating changes to land ownership, tenancy, or use, often to redistribute land or strengthen cultivators’ rights.

Land redistribution: The transfer of land from large owners or the state to smaller farmers or landless people. Redistribution is a central demand when movements challenge concentrated landownership.
Mexican Revolution: An armed conflict beginning in 1910 that overthrew Porfirio Díaz and reshaped Mexico’s political order. Its agrarian demands helped drive land redistribution under the postrevolutionary state.
Emiliano Zapata: A Mexican revolutionary leader who fought for village land rights during the Mexican Revolution. His Plan of Ayala made restitution of communal land a defining revolutionary demand.

Vinoba Bhave: An Indian advocate of nonviolence who founded the Bhoodan movement for voluntary land donation. His campaign offered a nonviolent path toward addressing landlessness.
Collective ownership: A system in which a group holds property rights jointly rather than as separate individual owners. It contrasts with reforms that distribute land as private individual plots.
Land nationalization: The transfer of private land ownership to the state, which may retain or reassign use rights. Some movements pursue public ownership as an alternative to private redistribution.
Maoist land reform: The redistribution of land from landlords to peasants during Communist campaigns in China. It shows how revolutionary movements used land reform to reorder rural class relations.
