Lanfang Republic

The Lanfang Republic was a Hakka Chinese kongsi federation in western Borneo, founded in 1777 and ended by Dutch colonial conquest in 1884.

Kongsi: A Chinese association or partnership, often organized around shared commerce, migration, or community life. Lanfang’s governing structure grew from kongsi organizations that coordinated mining and local affairs.
Luo Fangbo: A Hakka leader traditionally credited with founding the Lanfang kongsi in western Borneo. He led the migration and organization associated with Lanfang’s foundation in 1777.

Sultanate of Pontianak: A Malay sultanate founded in western Borneo in 1771, centered on Pontianak. Relations with this neighboring sultanate formed part of the political setting for Lanfang’s rise.
