Langston Hughes

Langston Hughes (1901–1967) was an American poet, novelist, playwright, and social activist whose writing helped shape the Harlem Renaissance and brought Black life into American literature.

Harlem Renaissance: A flowering of Black literature, art, and intellectual life centered in Harlem during the 1920s and 1930s. Hughes became one of the movement’s defining writers.
The Weary Blues: Langston Hughes’s 1926 poetry collection, known for its use of blues and jazz forms. This collection established the musical language that became central to his poetry.
Carl Van Vechten: An American writer and photographer who promoted Harlem Renaissance artists and documented Black cultural life. His support helped bring Hughes and other Harlem writers to wider attention.
Black Arts Movement: A Black nationalist arts movement in the United States that flourished during the 1960s and 1970s. Later Black artists inherited Hughes’s insistence that art engage Black life.

Zora Neale Hurston: An American writer and anthropologist whose fiction and folklore research shaped the Harlem Renaissance. Hughes and Hurston collaborated before a dispute over their play Mule Bone.
