Language and gender

Language and gender is an interdisciplinary field studying how language practices relate to gender identities, social relations, and inequalities.

Gender performativity: The idea that gender is constituted through repeated acts rather than expressed as a fixed inner essence. It explains how repeated speech and interaction can produce recognizable gender identities.
Robin Lakoff: An American linguist whose work examined language, gender, and social inequality. Her 1975 account helped establish gendered speech as a subject of linguistic inquiry.
Conversational interruption: The act of beginning to speak before another speaker has finished. Interruption patterns are studied as possible signs of gendered conversational power.
Variationist sociolinguistics: The study of how language variation relates to social factors and patterns of use. It provides methods for testing claims about gendered variation in speech.
Nonbinary language: Language practices and forms associated with expressing or recognizing identities outside the gender binary. It tests whether linguistic frameworks adequately represent identities beyond women and men.
Indexicality: The relation through which a sign points to social meanings beyond its literal content. Linguistic features can index gender without having an inherently gendered meaning.
Deficit model (language and gender): An approach that explains women’s speech as lacking features associated with men’s speech. Lakoff’s account is often discussed as an early deficit-model analysis.
Gender-fair language: Language choices intended to avoid excluding or stereotyping people by gender. Policy and editorial debates apply field insights to public and institutional wording.
Sex and gender distinction: A conceptual distinction between biological classifications and socially organized gender identities and roles. The field generally treats gender as social rather than interchangeable with sex.
Intersectionality: A framework for analyzing how overlapping systems of power shape social experience. Gendered language practices vary with race, class, sexuality, and other relations of power.
