Language change

Language change is the process by which a language’s sounds, vocabulary, grammar, or meanings shift over time. It occurs through patterns of use across communities and generations.

Sound change: A systematic alteration in how speech sounds are produced or distributed over time. Regular sound shifts can reshape a language’s pronunciation and distinguish related languages.
Historical linguistics: The study of language change and the historical relationships among languages. It provides the comparative methods used to investigate change across time.
William Labov: An American linguist known for quantitative studies of language variation and change. His studies connected variation within communities to changes unfolding over time.
Language divergence: The development of increasingly distinct forms from a shared ancestral language or variety. Accumulated changes can separate a speech community’s varieties over generations.
Analogy (linguistics): The reshaping of linguistic forms to match patterns found elsewhere in a language. Analogy spreads familiar patterns and can alter forms that sound change did not affect.
Comparative method: A procedure for reconstructing ancestral languages by comparing systematic correspondences among related languages. Regular correspondences help distinguish inherited change from accidental resemblance.
André Martinet: A French linguist known for work on phonology and the functional explanation of sound change. His functional account linked changes in sound systems to communicative pressures.
Language convergence: The growing similarity of languages or varieties through contact and shared patterns of use. It shows that contact-driven change can bring forms together as well as separate them.
Grammaticalization: The process by which lexical items or constructions develop grammatical functions. It shows how ordinary expressions can become markers of tense, aspect, or other grammar.
