Language contact

Language contact occurs when speakers of different languages interact regularly, allowing linguistic features to spread through borrowing, multilingualism, and structural influence.

Lexical borrowing: The adoption of words from one language into another. Words often cross language boundaries before deeper grammatical influence takes hold.
