Language death

Language death is the permanent cessation of a language’s use, usually when its last fluent speakers die or shift to another language. It can follow gradual loss of transmission across generations.

Language shift: The process by which a community increasingly uses one language instead of another. A community’s shift to a dominant language can bring the declining language to an end.
Manx language: A Goidelic language historically spoken on the Isle of Man and later revived after its native-speaker era. Manx is often described as having died with its last traditional native speaker, then undergone revival.
Linguistic diversity: The variety of languages spoken across individuals, communities, and the world. Each language death reduces the world’s inventory of living linguistic traditions.
Dormant language: A language no longer used in ordinary daily communication but retained in records or community practices. Whether a language is dead or dormant depends partly on how much use and community connection remain.
Colonialism: The political and economic domination of one territory and its people by another power. Colonial rule often imposed dominant languages through administration, schooling, and social pressure.
Intergenerational language transmission: The passing of a language from one generation to the next through social interaction. When children stop acquiring a language, its speaker population cannot replace itself.
Cornish language: A Celtic language of Cornwall whose community use declined and later re-emerged through revival. Cornish illustrates how a language can cease ordinary community transmission yet later gain new speakers.
Language and cultural identity: The relationship between language use and individuals’ or communities’ sense of belonging and heritage. Language loss can alter how communities express and transmit collective identity.
Language revival: The restoration or expansion of a language’s use after a period of decline or dormancy. Revival challenges simple definitions of irreversible language death.
Language policy: Laws and institutional practices that shape which languages are used, taught, or recognized. Policies can suppress a language or support its transmission across generations.
