Language divergence

Language divergence is the process by which related languages develop distinct forms and become less mutually intelligible through change over time and separation among speech communities.

Sound change: A systematic alteration in how speech sounds are pronounced over time. Regular sound changes can make inherited words sound unlike their counterparts in related languages.
Proto-language: A reconstructed or documented ancestral language from which related languages descend. The shared ancestor provides a baseline for identifying changes that accumulated after languages separated.
Latin: An ancient Indo-European language spoken in Rome and the Roman Empire. Its regional varieties developed into the Romance languages after the empire's political unity weakened.
Mutual intelligibility: The degree to which speakers of different language varieties understand one another without special study. It is a practical outcome of accumulated differences, but does not by itself determine language boundaries.
Semantic change: A shift in the meaning of a word or expression over time. Words shared by related languages can acquire different meanings as communities use them differently.
Comparative method: A procedure for reconstructing ancestral language forms by comparing related languages. Regular correspondences reveal which differences arose after the languages began diverging.
Romance languages: The group of languages descended from spoken Latin, including French, Spanish, and Italian. Their shared vocabulary and sound correspondences reveal divergence from a common source.
Dialect continuum: A chain of neighboring language varieties in which adjacent communities understand one another better than distant ones. Gradual divergence can create continuous transitions rather than clear linguistic borders.
Grammaticalization: The process by which words or constructions develop grammatical functions. Different grammaticalization paths can give related languages distinct structures.
Historical linguistics: The study of how languages change and how they are related through time. It provides the methods for tracing divergence across generations.
