Language variation

Language variation is the systematic difference in linguistic forms across speakers, situations, places, and times. It includes differences in pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, and style.

Sociolinguistics: The study of how language relates to society and social life. It provides the framework for studying variation among speakers and communities.
William Labov: An American sociolinguist known for foundational studies of language variation and change. His research demonstrated how pronunciation varies systematically with social context.
