Lanthanide

A metallic element in the series from lanthanum to lutetium, associated with progressive filling of the 4f orbitals. Lanthanides share closely similar chemistry, usually forming ions with a +3 charge.

4f orbital: An atomic orbital with angular momentum quantum number 3, occupied by electrons in lanthanide atoms and ions. Progressive occupation of this subshell defines the series’ electronic pattern.
Neodymium magnet: A permanent magnet made primarily from neodymium, iron, and boron. Neodymium’s 4f magnetism helps produce exceptionally strong compact magnets.
Johan Gadolin: A Finnish chemist who analyzed the mineral later named gadolinite in the late eighteenth century. His mineral analysis began the chain of discoveries that revealed the rare-earth elements.
Solvent extraction: A separation method that transfers substances between immiscible liquid phases according to their differing affinities. Repeated extraction stages exploit small differences among lanthanide ions to separate them.
Electron configuration: The distribution of an atom’s electrons among its orbitals. Lanthanide configurations show how 4f filling relates to chemical behavior.
Phosphor: A material that emits light after absorbing energy, commonly used in displays and lighting. Europium and terbium ions provide efficient, color-specific emission in many phosphors.
Carl Gustaf Mosander: A Swedish chemist who separated several rare-earth substances, including ceria and lanthana. His work showed that materials once treated as single substances contained multiple elements.
Ion-exchange chromatography: A separation technique that sorts ions by their reversible binding to a charged stationary material. Different lanthanide ions bind with slightly different strengths, enabling high-purity separation.
Lanthanide contraction: The gradual decrease in atomic and ionic radii across the lanthanide series as nuclear charge increases. Poor shielding by 4f electrons makes later lanthanides smaller.
Gadolinium-based contrast agent: A compound containing gadolinium used to enhance contrast in magnetic resonance imaging. Gadolinium’s magnetic properties alter nearby water-proton relaxation in MRI.
