Lanzhou

Lanzhou is the capital of Gansu province in north-central China, situated along the Yellow River. Its location in a narrow river valley has shaped its transport links and urban form.

Yellow River: The world’s sixth-longest river, flowing from the Tibetan Plateau across northern China to the Bohai Sea. Lanzhou grew along this river, whose valley cuts through the city.
Jincheng Commandery: A Han dynasty administrative commandery established in the region of present-day Lanzhou. Its establishment marks an early phase of state administration in Lanzhou’s area.
Lanzhou–Xinjiang Railway: A railway linking Lanzhou with Ürümqi and the Xinjiang region of western China. Lanzhou is the eastern terminus of this major rail route into northwest China.
Air pollution in China: The presence of harmful airborne pollutants across cities and regions of China. Lanzhou’s industrial activity and enclosed valley have made urban air quality a persistent concern.
Gansu: A province in northwestern China, stretching from the Tibetan Plateau toward the Gobi Desert. Lanzhou is Gansu’s provincial capital and principal urban center.
Silk Road: A network of land routes that connected China with Central Asia and regions farther west. Lanzhou served as a strategic eastern approach to the Hexi Corridor routes.
Lanzhou Zhongchuan International Airport: The international airport serving Lanzhou, located northwest of the urban center. It connects the provincial capital to domestic and international air networks.
Temperature inversion: An atmospheric condition in which warmer air overlies cooler air near the ground, limiting vertical mixing. Inversions can trap pollutants close to the valley floor in Lanzhou.
Hexi Corridor: A narrow passage through Gansu connecting the Chinese heartland with Central Asia. The corridor begins west of Lanzhou and made the city a gateway to inland routes.
Qin dynasty: The first imperial dynasty of China, which ruled from 221 to 206 BCE. Qin expansion into the northwest helped bring the Lanzhou region within an imperial frontier.
