Lapland War

The Lapland War was Finland’s 1944–1945 conflict with German forces retreating through northern Finland toward Norway after Finland’s armistice with the Soviet Union.

Moscow Armistice: The September 1944 agreement that ended hostilities between Finland and the Soviet Union and imposed terms on Finland. Its requirement that Finland expel German troops set the Lapland War in motion.
Continuation War: The 1941–1944 war between Finland and the Soviet Union, fought alongside Germany against Soviet forces. The Lapland War began as Finland ended this partnership under Soviet pressure.
Destruction of Rovaniemi: The destruction of much of Rovaniemi by German forces during their retreat in October 1944. It became the most visible example of the devastation inflicted on Lapland.
Battle of Tornio: A major October 1944 battle in which Finnish forces attacked German troops at Tornio in western Lapland. The landing and fighting at Tornio opened a decisive front against the German retreat.
Winter War: The 1939–1940 war in which the Soviet Union invaded Finland. Unlike the Lapland War against Germany, Finland fought the Soviet Union in this earlier conflict.

Reconstruction of Lapland: The postwar rebuilding of homes, infrastructure, and communities damaged during the Lapland War. Widespread destruction left Finnish Lapland facing an extensive reconstruction effort.
Tornio: A Finnish town at the head of the Gulf of Bothnia, near the Swedish border. Its port and border location made it a strategic target during the Finnish campaign.
Finland–Soviet Union armistice: The 1944 agreement that ended Finland’s war against the Soviet Union and imposed military and territorial terms. The armistice ended one conflict but required Finland to begin fighting German forces.
