Larisa Shepitko
Larisa Shepitko (1938–1979) was a Soviet film director and screenwriter whose stark, morally charged films include the wartime drama The Ascent.
The Ascent: Larisa Shepitko’s 1977 film follows two Soviet partisans captured by the Nazis during World War II. Her best-known film turns a Belarusian partisan story into a test of faith, betrayal, and moral choice.
