Last Judgment

The prophesied final judgment in which God judges the living and the dead, determining their eternal destinies. In Christian traditions, it is associated with the resurrection of the dead and the end of history.

Resurrection of the dead: The belief that the dead will be restored to life, often at the end of time. The final judgment is commonly placed after the dead are raised.
Matthew 25:31–46: A passage in the Gospel of Matthew depicting the Son of Man separating people as a shepherd separates sheep from goats. Its scene of judgment links eternal destiny to acts of mercy toward those in need.
Particular judgment: In Catholic teaching, God's judgment of each person immediately after death. It concerns each soul at death, unlike the universal judgment at history's end.
Divine justice: The theological idea that God's judgments are perfectly just and accord with divine goodness. The Last Judgment expresses the belief that injustice will ultimately be answered by God.
Eschatology: The study or doctrine of last things, including death, judgment, and the end of the world. The Last Judgment is a central event in Christian eschatology.
Revelation 20: A chapter of Revelation describing the dead before a great white throne and the opening of books. Its imagery of the throne, books, and second death became a major scriptural picture of final judgment.
Amillennialism: A Christian interpretation that understands Revelation's thousand-year reign symbolically rather than as a future earthly millennium. It interprets the millennium preceding final judgment differently from premillennial schemes.
Christian ethics: The study of moral conduct and principles within Christian traditions. Expectation of judgment has often framed Christian accounts of moral responsibility.
Heaven: The ultimate state or realm of communion with God in many religious traditions. Christian accounts commonly identify heaven as one possible eternal destiny.
Last Judgment (Michelangelo): Michelangelo's fresco of Christ judging the dead, painted on the altar wall of the Sistine Chapel. Its monumental scene is among the most influential visual depictions of the doctrine.
