Knowra Latency Latency Latency is the social function through which a system maintains and renews cultural patterns and sustains members’ motivation. In Talcott Parsons’s framework, it is one of four functions required for a social system to persist.
Pattern maintenance : The process by which a social system preserves and renews its shared values and norms. This is the cultural maintenance function at the center of latency.
AGIL paradigm : Talcott Parsons’s model of four functional requirements for the persistence of social systems. Latency is the L in this four-function framework.
Adaptation (sociology) : The social-system function of obtaining and allocating resources in response to environmental conditions. Adaptation manages external resources; latency renews cultural patterns and motivation.
Family : A socially recognized group connected by kinship, partnership, adoption, or caregiving relationships. Parsons treated family life as a setting for early socialization and emotional support.
Socialization : The process through which people learn the norms, values, and roles of their society. Socialization renews cultural patterns by transmitting them to new members.
Talcott Parsons : An American sociologist who developed a major structural-functional theory of social action and systems. Parsons formulated latency as a function of social systems.
Goal attainment : The social-system function of setting collective priorities and mobilizing resources to achieve them. Goal attainment pursues collective objectives, unlike latency’s pattern maintenance.
Education : The organized transmission of knowledge, skills, norms, and cultural practices. Schools help transmit cultural patterns beyond the family.
Social integration : The coordination of members and groups through shared norms, relationships, and institutions. Integration supports the commitments that latency helps sustain.
Structural functionalism : A sociological approach that explains social institutions by the functions they perform within a system. Latency is framed as a system-maintaining function within this approach.
