Later Jin

The Later Jin was a Jurchen state founded by Nurhaci in 1616 in northeastern China. It preceded the Qing dynasty and was renamed Great Qing in 1636.

Nurhaci: A Jurchen leader who unified several Jurchen groups and founded the Later Jin in 1616. He founded the state and led its expansion against Ming China.
Eight Banners: A military and social organization that grouped households and armies under banner identities. The banner system mobilized Later Jin forces and organized its subjects.
Qing dynasty: China’s last imperial dynasty, founded by the Manchus and ruling from 1644 to 1912. It inherited the Later Jin state after Hong Taiji proclaimed the new dynasty in 1636.
Jin dynasty: A Jurchen-led dynasty that ruled northern China from 1115 to 1234. The Later Jin adopted the name of this earlier Jurchen dynasty, but was a separate state founded centuries later.
Jurchen people: A Tungusic-speaking people of Manchuria whose descendants include the Manchus. The Later Jin drew its population, ruling elite, and military strength from Jurchen communities.
Battle of Sarhu: A 1619 campaign in which Later Jin forces defeated several Ming armies near Sarhu. The victory established the Later Jin as a serious military rival to the Ming.
Shanhai Pass: A fortified pass at the eastern end of the Great Wall, controlling access to the North China Plain. Qing forces entered China through the pass in 1644, completing a conquest begun under the Later Jin.
Great Qing: The dynastic name proclaimed by Hong Taiji in 1636 for the state previously called Later Jin. The name change marked a broader imperial claim beyond the original Jurchen polity.
Seven Grievances: Nurhaci’s 1618 declaration listing grievances against Ming rule and justifying war. It announced the Later Jin’s armed challenge to the Ming dynasty.
Hong Taiji: Nurhaci’s son and successor, who ruled from 1626 and proclaimed the Qing dynasty in 1636. He expanded the state and changed its dynastic name from Later Jin to Qing.
