Later Zhou

The Later Zhou was a Chinese dynasty that ruled northern China from 951 to 960, the last of the Five Dynasties before the Song dynasty.

Guo Wei: A military commander who founded the Later Zhou dynasty and ruled as Emperor Taizu. His 951 seizure of power established the dynasty.
Chenqiao Mutiny: The 960 military coup in which Zhao Kuangyin's troops proclaimed him emperor. It transferred power from the Later Zhou court to the Song founder.
Song dynasty: A Chinese dynasty that ruled much of China from 960 to 1279. It succeeded the Later Zhou and inherited its expanding central state.
Later Tang: A Chinese dynasty that ruled northern China from 923 to 936, one of the Five Dynasties. It was an earlier northern regime whose collapse helped sustain the cycle the Later Zhou ended.
Later Han: A Chinese dynasty that ruled northern China from 947 to 951, immediately before the Later Zhou. The Later Zhou emerged when Guo Wei overthrew this short-lived predecessor.
Later Zhou reforms: Administrative and military measures undertaken by Guo Rong to strengthen the Later Zhou state. They increased central control and prepared the state for reunification.
Battle of Gaoping: A 954 battle in which Later Zhou forces defeated an invasion by Northern Han and Liao troops. The victory strengthened Guo Rong's authority and enabled later reforms.
Later Liang: A Chinese dynasty that ruled northern China from 907 to 923, the first of the Five Dynasties. Its brief rule contrasts with the Later Zhou's role as the final northern dynasty before the Song.
Five Dynasties: A succession of five short-lived regimes that ruled northern China from 907 to 960. The Later Zhou was the final regime in this sequence.
Shatuo Turks: A Turkic people whose military elites founded or dominated several northern Chinese dynasties. Shatuo military networks shaped the political order from which the Later Zhou arose.
