Lateral geniculate nucleus

The lateral geniculate nucleus is a thalamic structure that receives input from the retina and sends organized visual signals to the primary visual cortex. It also modulates this transmission through local circuits and feedback.

Retina: The light-sensitive neural tissue lining the back of the eye, where photoreceptors begin visual processing. Retinal ganglion-cell axons provide the principal input to the nucleus.
Retinal ganglion cell: A retinal neuron whose axon carries processed visual signals toward the brain. These cells supply the nucleus with its direct retinal input.
Koniocellular pathway: A set of interlaminar pathways in the lateral geniculate nucleus carrying visual signals distinct from magnocellular and parvocellular streams. Its neurons occupy interlaminar zones rather than the major magnocellular and parvocellular layers.
Visual evoked potential: An electrical brain response recorded after visual stimulation, reflecting activity along visual pathways. Its signals can help assess transmission through the pathway that includes the nucleus.
Optic tract: The paired bundles of retinal ganglion-cell axons carrying visual information from the optic chiasm toward the brain. It carries most retinal output onward to the nucleus after fibers cross at the chiasm.
Optic chiasm: The junction where some optic nerve fibers cross to the opposite side of the brain. Its partial crossing arranges input by visual hemifield before it reaches the nucleus.
Superior colliculus: A midbrain structure involved in orienting the eyes and head toward visual and other sensory stimuli. It supports visual orienting through a route distinct from the geniculate-to-cortex pathway.
Optic neuritis: Inflammation of the optic nerve that can impair vision and alter visual signaling to the brain. It disrupts retinal output before that input reaches the geniculate relay.
Retinotopy: The orderly mapping of positions in the visual field onto locations in a neural structure. The nucleus preserves a spatial map of the visual field in its relay layers.
Visual field: The portion of space visible to an eye or to both eyes at a given moment. The nucleus's maps and eye-specific inputs are organized around visual-field location.
