Latin American Boom

The Latin American Boom was a literary movement of the 1960s and 1970s that brought Latin American fiction to international prominence through innovative novels and influential writers.

Gabriel García Márquez: A Colombian novelist whose fiction includes One Hundred Years of Solitude and Chronicle of a Death Foretold. His international success made him the Boom’s most widely recognized writer.
One Hundred Years of Solitude: A 1967 novel by Gabriel García Márquez tracing several generations of the Buendía family in the fictional town of Macondo. Its blend of family saga, political history, and the marvelous became emblematic of the Boom.
Magical realism: A narrative mode that presents extraordinary or supernatural events in an otherwise matter-of-fact fictional world. It became closely associated with the Boom, especially through García Márquez’s fiction.
