Latin Averroism

A medieval European movement that adopted or debated positions associated with Averroes’s Aristotelian commentaries, especially on the intellect, eternity, and the relation between philosophy and theology.

Aristotle: An ancient Greek philosopher whose works shaped logic, natural philosophy, metaphysics, and ethics. His works supplied the philosophical framework Latin Averroists interpreted through Averroes.
Unity of the intellect: The thesis that the possible intellect is one and shared by all human beings. Averroes’s interpretation of Aristotle made this the central doctrinal controversy.
Siger of Brabant: A thirteenth-century Parisian master associated with controversial interpretations of Aristotle and Averroes. He became the best-known Latin master linked to Averroist positions.
Toledo School of Translators: A network of medieval translators in Toledo who rendered Arabic and Greek works into Latin. Translations from Arabic helped make Aristotle and Averroes available to Latin scholars.
Thomism: The philosophical and theological tradition based on the thought of Thomas Aquinas. Aquinas opposed key positions attributed to Averroes while offering a Christian Aristotelian synthesis.
Averroes: A twelfth-century Andalusi philosopher and jurist known for extensive commentaries on Aristotle. His commentaries gave the movement its name and many of its disputed theses.
Eternity of the world: The thesis that the universe has no temporal beginning and has always existed. Aristotelian arguments for an eternal cosmos challenged Christian creation doctrines.
Boethius of Dacia: A thirteenth-century Danish philosopher who wrote on the highest good and the philosophical life. His writings became central to debates about the autonomy of philosophical inquiry.
Gerard of Cremona: A twelfth-century Italian translator who worked in Toledo and rendered many Arabic scientific texts into Latin. His translation activity formed part of the broader transmission that enabled Latin Aristotelianism.
Avicennism: The philosophical tradition shaped by the works of Avicenna and their reception in medieval Europe. Latin scholars encountered Avicenna alongside Averroes, but the traditions differed on major doctrines.
