Law (legal system)

Law is a system of rules recognized and enforced by political institutions to govern conduct and resolve disputes. Its institutions and procedures distinguish legal rules from social customs and private commands.

Legal system: The institutions, rules, and procedures through which a society creates, interprets, and enforces law. This broader framework includes the rules and institutions that make law operative.
Court: A public institution that resolves legal disputes and determines legal questions through authorized procedures. Courts interpret rules and issue decisions in individual disputes.
Morality: Standards and judgments concerning right and wrong conduct. A rule may be legally valid while remaining morally contested.
Contract law: The body of law governing agreements, including their formation, interpretation, and enforcement. It uses legal rules to structure promises and private exchange.
Rule of law: The principle that public power is exercised under publicly known, consistently applied legal rules. It sets a standard for limiting arbitrary government action through law.
Legislation: Law made by a legislature or other body exercising delegated lawmaking authority. Statutes are a major source of rules within modern legal systems.
Judicial interpretation: The process by which judges determine the meaning and application of legal texts and precedents. Legal rules often require interpretation before they can decide a concrete case.
Custom: A customary practice is a repeated social behavior treated by a community as expected or binding. Custom can guide conduct without state recognition or enforcement.
Property law: The body of law governing rights in things, including possession, use, and transfer. It allocates and enforces claims over land and other resources.
Human rights: Rights held by people by virtue of being human, often protected through legal instruments and institutions. Legal systems can recognize and enforce protections against abuses of power.
