Law of Suspects

A law enacted by France’s National Convention in September 1793 that broadened the grounds for arresting people suspected of opposing the Revolution.

Law of 22 Prairial: A 1794 French law that sharply restricted defendants’ rights and expanded the Revolutionary Tribunal’s power to impose death sentences. It extended the Terror’s legal machinery from broad arrest to expedited conviction.
National Convention: The French assembly that governed during the Republic from 1792 to 1795. The Convention enacted the Law of Suspects on 17 September 1793.
Bertrand Barère: A French revolutionary politician who served on the Committee of Public Safety and spoke for emergency measures. He presented the bill that became the Law of Suspects to the Convention.

Revolutionary Tribunal: A Paris court established in 1793 to try alleged enemies of the French Revolution. Detainees could face this tribunal if authorities brought them to trial.
Federalist revolts: Regional uprisings in 1793 against the authority of France’s revolutionary government in Paris. The revolts intensified fears that political opposition threatened the Republic.
