Lawrence Hargrave

Lawrence Hargrave (1850–1915) was an Australian engineer and inventor whose box-kite experiments and work on curved airfoils contributed to early aviation.

Box kite: A kite built from box-shaped cells that provide stability and lift. Hargrave’s cellular designs made box kites effective experimental tools for studying flight.
Cellular kite: A kite made from multiple connected cells that form a rigid, stable structure. Hargrave’s box kites used cells to combine lift with steadiness in the air.
Australian Museum: A natural history museum in Sydney, founded in 1827. Hargrave donated models and research materials that remain associated with his work.
Samuel Pierpont Langley: An American astronomer and aviation researcher who built powered flying models and failed full-scale aircraft. Langley’s powered-model work drew on the lift-producing cellular-wing form Hargrave demonstrated.
Hargrave box kite: A cellular kite developed by Lawrence Hargrave to produce stable lift. This was his best-known experimental design and a practical demonstration of cellular lift.

Hargrave glider: An unpowered flying machine designed and tested by Lawrence Hargrave. His glider trials examined whether kite-derived lifting surfaces could support a person.
